  • Abstract:

The organizational and personnel issues are examined that emerged from the relationships between the management contractor and trade contractors on one construction project in London. Data were collected using 2 research instruments: 1. a short psychological test, and 2. a semi-structured interview. The results illustrate the importance of creating compatible teams to generate effective teamwork. Conflicts between trade contractors and construction managers were noted in areas that included: 1. the clarity of the requirements of trade contractors within a work package and between work packages, 2. the level of "unlearning" of traditional subcontractor behaviour to accommodate a new autonomous status by trade contractors, 3. uncertainty about the role of trade contractors’ site managers with respect to construction managers, and 4. the uncertainty of trade contractors about their influence over project decisions. There was a dichotomy found between "traditional" and "specialist" trade contractors.
